What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis causes EXCESS curvature of the spine. Scoliosis is progressive in nature and its cause is unknown, therefore termed Idiopathic Scoliosis.

Adult scoliosis is normally a direct result of asymmetrical degeneration of the spine and the surrounding soft tissues. Adults may have pre-existing adolescent scoliosis and this curve may worsen throughout their life.

Idiopathic scoliosis is divided into 3 subgroups based on age. Scoliosis in the younger ages can be found in 0-3 years (infantile scoliosis), 4-10 years (juvenile scoliosis) or 11-18 years (adolescent scoliosis). The cause of a child or teenagers curve to progress is unknown. Contributing factors such as genetics and hyper-mobility are known.

Emphasis is placed on a child/teenagers curve as the curve can rapidly progress during a period of growth. If this curve reaches a particular change then the patient may be recommended bracing or possibly surgery in severe cases.

Research has shown that when scoliosis is picked up in the early stages it can be treated effectively with Physiotherapy Specific Scoliosis Exercises and in more moderate-severe cases bracing.
